Still My Favorite Science

Let me get right to the point.   After 14 years of homeschooling with two graduates so far, Adventurer awards and Pathfinder honors are still my favorite science.  I’ll tell you why.

You will find a wide variety of topics among the awards and honors. Our family preferred that over single subject science programs.   Just the Pathfinder nature section alone features more than 90 honors covering zoology, botany, astronomy, etc.  The Bridges honor in Pathfinder Arts and Crafts is a study in physics.  Don’t forget Adventurer awards like Butterfly or  Friend of Animals  for the younger children.  The nice thing is , the majority of the work is already done for me.  These awards and honors are essentially free, organized, ready-to-go unit studies just waiting for me to download and print.  Doesn’t get easier than that!  If you’re not a science-minded person (I’m not), you will find the convenience of the answers in Adventurer and Pathfinder Wikibooks.

It is not hard to adjust the difficulty of the requirements to fit a child’s individual needs.  Customize the requirements by looking for library resources that extend the learning, as well as check for advanced or related honors.  Become and expert in a particular area by completing the Master award requirements.   Add in videos,  trips to museums, community classes, and specialty equipment and you’ll be working on some serious productive interest-led science learning.  The key is, you’ll only get out of it what you put into it.

I usually choose several awards that I think my children would benefit from experiencing, and ask my children to choose some that they would like to complete. Some years we have worked on only one or two honors, other years we have completed multiple honors. The interest level has always been high for my kids and as they grew into their high school years, my oldest two advanced from completing the honors themselves to teaching an honor to others at summer camp.

In high school, my children experienced traditional science courses, 4-H science classes, online coursework.  They did well in those classes, but their strong interest in science was founded in the awards and honors we completed through their middle school years.

If you are a new homeschooler, or on a tight budget, or need to meet special needs, or want to kindle an interest in science, I wholeheartedly recommend giving Adventurer and Pathfinder honors a try.

Science Tools for Science-Minded Homeschoolers

Are  STEM (science/technology/engineering/math) subjects are a favorite in your homeschool?  Do your children truly enjoy nature study? Is a child showing an interest in deeper STEM study?     If so, then you are likely looking for science tools and resources that go beyond the cheap plastic chemistry sets and play bug nets available at most toy stores.

Every homeschool family that wants to expand or extend any branch of STEM study should be on the mailing list  for the following science resource catalogs listed below.

Nasco Science

Home Science Tools

Nature’s Workshop Plus!

Carolina Biological

We love to get all four of these catalogs in the mail! My children love to mark the pages with kits or equipment that looks exciting to them.   I’ll readily admit that I’ve marked up these science catalogs as well, with all the science curriculum kits, materialsscience 3 and supplements that I’d like to use. I have ordered curriculum materials, lab equipment, microscope slides, dissections sets, etc. from these companies  and have been nothing but satisfied.

The links take you to the catalog request portion of each site, but these companies also have online catalogs as well for immediate browsing.

Both Nasco and Carolina also offer specialty catalogs for specific subject areas such as chemistry, agriculture or early learning.

Do you know of another science resource catalog that would benefit homeschool families?  Please tell us about it in the comments below.

Outline for Gardening – Unit Study Idea

Outline for Gardening is a 28 page booklet recently released by our sister ministry,  Sonlight Education Ministry (SEM).  It is an older publication not found in the SEM catalog, but is full of such possibility!

My first thought was that the booklet is a wonderful gardening curriculum outline.  Starting several months before planting season begins in your area, you can work on understanding each section of the outline and how it applies to your particular growing zone. The various sections lend themselves to different types of projects and activities.

For example, for Sunlight: Measure and graph the amount of sunlight several potential garden plots receive each day and use the information to choose the best garden plots.

Soil: Do a home soil test or send a soil sample to your area’s university extenstion service for testing.  Use the results to learn what the your soil needs and how to provide for those needs.

Variety selection:  Order several seed/gardening catalogs and let your child create a collage of the garden they would like to grow in the coming season.

The companion planting section is written in such a way as to add a very nice character development/spiritual growth aspect to your study.

Outline for Gardening is available for free download on the Sonlight Education Ministry website.  While you are there, be sure to check the Released Materials page to see what has been recently released.
