The testimony of the Sullivan family who moved from the city to the countryside seeking a simpler life, a new occupation and a deeper walk with the Lord.
We have been in this home 13 years. We’re thinking we’d like another home with a few more acres. Not right now, but soon. Looking towards a future sale, I thought, “Why wait?” Let’s get started now on clearing the house of things not worth packing up for a move. I challenged myself to fill a certain number of bags and boxes for donation or trash each week. It seemed like the more I decluttered the house, the more clutter surfaced. It became a frustrating never-ending battle. The Lord put it on my heart to stop and give this problem some deliberate thought. How could a seemingly frugal household constantly produce so many bags of clutter? I’m not a shopper. I don’t go to very many stores, especially the home goods type stores. I’m not even a good window shopper. Where was all this stuff coming from?
Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes. Song of Solomon 2:15
The answer came one afternoon as I picked up a sweet little fall decor item. So pretty! Only $1! It will look nice on the mantel! There is your problem, the Lord told me. You don’t buy big ticket items, but you think nothing of throwing a few $1 items in your basket each week. They add up. You don’t notice it at first, however slowly but surely, you are building a collection of clutter. Then suddenly you are overwhelmed .
Then the Lord said to me, This goes way beyond knick-knacks, Ann.
“It is the little things of life that develop the spirit in men and women and determine the character…. In words, in tones, in gestures, in looks, you can represent the spirit of Jesus. He who neglects these little things, and yet flatters himself that he is ready to do wonderful things for the Master, will be in danger of failing altogether. Life is not made up of great sacrifices and wonderful achievements, but of little things.” -My Life Today, p.172
Would you like to combine reading the Bible with the corresponding Spirit of Prophecy books? The Encounter series has it all organized for you in a .pdf download. The Encounter Series was originally created as an AY/Pathfinder club reading plan. Many people have discovered that this reading plan works wonderfully as a Bible curriculum for middle or high school-aged students, or as a family worship reading outline.

Outline for Gardening is a 28 page booklet recently released by our sister ministry, Sonlight Education Ministry (SEM). It is an older publication not found in the SEM catalog, but is full of such possibility!
My first thought was that the booklet is a wonderful gardening curriculum outline. Starting several months before planting season begins in your area, you can work on understanding each section of the outline and how it applies to your particular growing zone. The various sections lend themselves to different types of projects and activities.
For example, for Sunlight: Measure and graph the amount of sunlight several potential garden plots receive each day and use the information to choose the best garden plots.
Soil: Do a home soil test or send a soil sample to your area’s university extenstion service for testing. Use the results to learn what the your soil needs and how to provide for those needs.
Variety selection: Order several seed/gardening catalogs and let your child create a collage of the garden they would like to grow in the coming season.
The companion planting section is written in such a way as to add a very nice character development/spiritual growth aspect to your study.
Outline for Gardening is available for free download on the Sonlight Education Ministry website. While you are there, be sure to check the Released Materials page to see what has been recently released.
