The Great Backyard Bird Count 2012

The Great Backyard Bird count is a fun way  to incorporate nature study into your program and make a contribution to science at the same time!

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event.

Click on the image to head over to the GBBC website where you can learn more about the count, download activity pages and tally sheets and learn more about birds in preparation for the count.

The Great Backyard Bird Count takes place February 17-20, 2012. Why not use the Adventurer Feathered Friends award and the Pathfinder Birds and Birds-Advanced honors to turn the bird count into a fun unit study?

Thanksgiving Lapbook

Thanksgiving is coming, ready or not! Thanksgiving is a very fun time to do a unit study with homeschoolers. Learn about the Pilgrims, about religious liberty, about the northeast Indians, about harvest. There are so many aspects to choose from. Here are a few ideas of books to read and ways to put together a lapbook about Thanksgiving.

Some fun reads for children are Squanto And The Miracle Of Thanksgiving, Stories of the Pilgrims, The Thanksgiving Story, If You Were at the First Thanksgiving. and If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620.

If you would like to make a Thanksgiving lapbook, you can get some very nice printable mini books from the books History Pockets, Life in Plymouth Colony and Easy Make and Learn Projects: The Pilgrims, the Mayflower and More. You can also find some things that could be used in a lap book and some fun crafts for Thanksgiving at Danielle’s Place and at Enchanted Learning.

Here are some pictures of Thanksgiving lap books by some of our very own AHE children:

T-shirt ART Project…CANCELLED… see comments below

We are going to host a fundraiser for AHE.  We will be selling some bags and t-shirts with a designed logo for the 2011-2012 school year.  To do this, we need your help!

T-shirt Art Project:

We will be accepting designs created from moms, kids, dads (grandparents, etc… ) from families that are currently homeschooling.

The design can be anything related to homeschooling, it doesn’t HAVE to be related to AHE.

The design should have a place for 2011-2012 dates on it somewhere, although it doesn’t need to be prominent.  *If not included in the design itself, it can be included in a tagline below the design such as “2011-2012 design by “Robbie”, homeschooler”.

There will be no prize, as indicated earlier.  Please see comments below.  We simply are not able to come up with art ideas on our own and hope that out of kindness of your hearts, you would like to join us in trying to find an appropriate design.  The art project gives your kids something to work on, for art, but we never meant it to be a competition of a sort.

Deadline for submissions:  SEPTEMBER 29th, 2011

Submit your art to:  adventisthomeducator@gmail.com

Have FUN with this!!!  :)

Counting Birds? Share with Us!

Are you participating in The Great Backyard Bird Count that starts tomorrow?  We’d love to discover what  AHE students have learned about birds!   Students, share with us a student drawing, painting or photograph.   Send in a paragraph that you have written or narrated to your parents about birds.  Let us hear about the list of birds you identified during the bird count.

Parents, send your student’s contribution to editor.aheblog (at) gmail.com .   We won’t publish names, just the first initial and the home state/province.  International AHE parents: The Great Backyard Bird Count is a North American project, but don’t let that stop you from joining in!  It would be wonderful to hear about birds from all over the world!
